Situation Update

As of Friday, Sept 18, 2020 12:53 PM PDT

VA Northern California Health Care System and our Veteran patients have experienced a series of changes to our policies in response to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. We thought it wise, then, to provide an update to ensure Veterans are informed of our current practices:

  • Visitors: Visitors are not allowed at VA NorCal facilities. Exceptions will be made only for those critical to the care of our patients. Absolutely no visitors allowed under age 18.
  • Masking: VA NorCal continues to require each patient, VA staff member, visitor, or contractor to wear a cloth face covering or other suitable mask when entering a VA NorCal facility.
  • Screening: VA NorCal continues to screen each person seeking entrance to a VA NorCal facility. Visitors and staff, however, can expedite the process by answering screening questions beforehand on our COVID-19 Screening Tool at https://www.northerncalifornia.va.gov/wellness/covidscreening.html.
  • VEText: To minimize risk of COVID-19 exposure, Veterans with scheduled appointments can notify their care team that they have arrived at the facility from their vehicle using the VEText program. The process is simple: Once a Veteran arrives, they text the message “HERE” to 53079 to alert their care team that they’ve arrived; the Veteran receives a text acknowledging their check-in status; when the care team is ready, the Veteran will receive another text instructing them to proceed to their appointment (note: Veterans must have a text-capable cell phone number on file with us).
  • Canteen: VA NorCal’s cafeteria, coffee shop, and convenience store continue to operate at the Sacramento VA Medical Center in Mather. In order to reduce the risk of COVID-19 exposure we offer only carryout meals and do not offer dine-in seating in our cafeteria.

To address concerns not outlined in this letter, we urge each Veteran patient to contact their VA NorCal care team or the VA NorCal Call Center at 1-800-382-VETS (8387). We appreciate your flexibility and support as we work together to navigate the evolving COVID-19 pandemic.
