PM&R manages disorders that alter the function and performance of the Veteran. Emphasis is placed on the optimization of function through the combined use of medications, physical modalities, physical training with therapeutic exercise, movement and activities modification, adaptive equipment and assistive devices, orthotics, prosthesis, and experiential training.

PM&R physicians (also known as physiatrists), occupational therapists, and physical therapists evaluate and treat many different conditions including brain injury, stroke, polytrauma (multiple traumatic injuries), amputation, spinal cord injury, musculoskeletal pain, syndromes such as low back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia, and nerve pain. Physiatrists also perform electrodiagnostics used to provide nervous system functional information for diagnostic and prognosis for various neuromuscular disorders, or perform nerve blocks, spasticity injections, spinal and peripheral joint injections.
