Number of Visitors

Normally, inpatients at the Sacramento VA Medical Center may receive no more than two visitors at a time.

Children Under 12 Years of Age

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Our general policy is that children under 12 may not visit patients. In extreme circumstances, children under 12 may visit with the permission of the physician and the unit nurse manager. An adult must accompany children at all times.

Medical-Surgical Unit

Patient care is our first priority, so there may be times when visitors may be asked to step out of the patient's room. We ask that children and adults with colds or infectious diseases not visit patients. It is recommended that children under 12 not visit inpatients. When it is in the best interest of the patient to have children under 12 visit, permission must be obtained from the unit nurse manager.

Members of the clergy are welcome to visit their members at any time at the discretion of the unit physicians or nurses.

ICU Overnight Visits

We do not normally have space to accommodate overnight stays for family members of patients. However, depending on the patient's condition, the physician in charge may authorize extended or overnight stays for patients who are terminally ill and whose death is imminent, and those patients requiring one-to-one observation.

Center for Rehabilitation and Extended Care

Family and friends are encouraged to visit patients as this is considered an important part of the healing process. All visitors entering the building after 8:00 p.m. must sign in with the VA Police at the main entrance.

Patients whose condition permits them to leave the unit are encouraged to visit with relatives and friends on the grounds or other suitable areas of the CREC.
